Essex County Commissioner Announces Run for Sherrill’s Congressional Seat 

Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill announced Thursday he will be running for Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill’s soon-to-be-vacant seat in the 11th Congressional district.

Gill, a lifelong Montclair resident who has served as a commissioner-at-large since 2011, makes the announcement less than two days after Sherrill defeated Jack Ciatarelli in the gubernatorial race with a double-digit margin.

“I’ve been lucky enough to serve Essex county, serve my hometown, as an elected official,” Gill said in an interview Thursday. “The thrust of my candidacy is I have a 16 and a 13 year old and I’m beyond concerned that so many of the opportunities that I had — to grow up middle class here in Montclair, get a quality public school education, get to a private university located in the state and find a career doing something I love — is not going to be available.
